May 25, 2017 - As the prevalence of liver disease continues to rise across the world, the growing number of people impacted by cirrhosis, liver cancer, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is the focus of more than 1,700 of the world’s leading liver disease experts who are meeting here in Prague, Czech Republic, this week to share innovative research that aims to identify and enhance prevention techniques and improve outcomes.

May 24, 2017 - Last Thursday night, I tweeted: "The story we're dropping tomorrow is the 1st time I wish I had a superpower to *force* people to read a thing." I still think that. "The Last Person You'd Expect to Die in Childbirth" is the first part of our investigation with NPR into how the United States has become the most dangerous place to be pregnant among the world's more affluent nations. Every year 700 to 900 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes, and some 65,000 nearly die. Almost 60 percent of the deaths are preventable.

We told the story of Lauren Bloomstein — a nurse, married to a doctor — who died at her own hospital 20 hours after her daughter was born. Here's a video her husband Larry took soon after the birth.

March 18, 2017 - Are you hitting a wall when it comes to your efforts to lose weight? It happens to the best and most diet conscientious among us. Once you made the decision to eat healthier foods and cut out the junk food, you probably lost quite a bit of weight rather quickly. But then you may have hit the dreaded plateau. It seems no matter how healthy you keep your choices, you just can’t lose another pound and, as if to add insult to injury, you actually gained a few pounds. The problem is that our concept of healthy foods leads us to believe we will automatically lose weight because we eat them. But, as you know by now, this is not true.
